I'm glad you saved some of the stuff. I've gone through all my stuff and got rid of everything but letters and diaries and a few poems. When I did it I was aghast with how terrible it all was and I wanted to throw it all away. I am glad I kept some of because I can laugh at them now.

i thoroughly enjoyed this! i completed the same monumental undertaking nine or so years ago, which means i have new things to be embarrased about (including the poem i wrote about said monumental undertaking). it was pretty freeing to throw all that stuff away. i wish i had had more from grade school though. children are all half-insane, and it's nice to have a record of it. i remember writing a story about sleeping outside and the moonbeams coming down and picking me up. my teacher said it was good.

The power of the life laundry. I think it's good to bag it up, kiss it goodbye, throw it out. You've done that little girl proud, keeping the creativity but surrounding her with people to love.

Speaking of childhood story telling, Ruby wrote down her first story a couple of weeks ago. I think you'll appreciate it. Beneath a picture of an autumn-ish tree she wrote: ALONGTIMEAGAITWASALIV. ANDTHENITDID. Short, no-nonsense and to the point. Brilliant!

I also got my high school papers back from my parents recently and what an eye-opener. I'd thought I was good at writing (because that's what my teachers told me!) but the evidence was definitely to the contrary.

What's scariest to me is that I still got good grades on the papers, along with enthusiastic comments. And the content of the papers was drivel, really. I'm not being modest. They were obviously dashed off in minutes with little thought. So... what were the C, D and F papers like?!
